5 Steps for a Safer Bath Time When Bathing Baby Alone

Solo bath time with your baby doesn’t have to feel overwhelming! With a few simple steps and the right techniques, you can ensure bath time is safe, stress-free, and even enjoyable. Follow this easy, step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Prep Everything Ahead of Time

  • Gather all the essentials—soap, washcloths, rinse cups, fresh diapers, clothes, and towels.
  • Place them within arm’s reach to avoid leaving your baby unattended.
  • Bonus Tip: Lay out a cozy spot for post-bath snuggles!

Step 2: Set Up for Safety

  • Depending on where you're giving your baby a bath, you can use an insert or non-slip mat for comfort and to keep everything in place.  However, don't rely on these products to keep baby safe - always keep your hands on your baby at all times. Here's a link to the "hook method" we use when bathing newborns to keep their head above water.
  • Check the water temperature with a thermometer or your wrist—ideal is 37°C to 38°C (98°F to 100°F).
  • Keep the water level shallow—just a few inches for newborns.
  • and again, always keep your hands on your baby, no matter what!

Step 3: Try a Swaddle Bath for Comfort

Swaddle baths are a game-changer for fussy babies. Here’s how to do it:

  • Wrap your baby in a lightweight, swaddle or muslin blanket before placing them in the tub.
  • Gently pour lukewarm water over them to wet the swaddle/ blanket
  • Gently unwrap one section at a time to clean, re-covering them after.
  • This often reduces crying and keeps your baby calm.

Step 4: Keep the Mood Relaxed

  • Talk, sing, or play soft music during the bath to create a calming atmosphere.
  • Stay relaxed—babies can pick up on stress, so take it slow and enjoy the moment!

Step 5: Make the Transition Easier with a Hands-Free Towel

Lifting your baby out of the tub while managing a slippery towel can feel impossible—enter our Lift, Unsnap & Wrap hands-free baby towel:

  • Snap it around your neck before starting the bath.
  • Keep both hands free to safely lift and hold your baby.
  • The absorbent organic cotton towel dries your baby fast while keeping you dry.
  • Designed to make bath time safer and easier, it’s perfect for solo parents managing busy routines.

By following these steps, and with a little bit of practice, you’ll turn solo bath time into a smooth, enjoyable routine for you and your baby. Your baby might cry the first few times you attempt to do bath time alone - don't fret. The biggest takeaway here is to just make sure your baby is safe by keeping your hands on them at all times - the rest will slowly fall into place and you will find a routine that works for both of you!
