Cradle Cap and Bath Time
Share
If you’ve noticed flaky, scaly patches on your baby’s scalp, don’t worry—you’re not alone! Cradle cap is super common and totally harmless, but it can look a little alarming at first. The good news? Bath time is one of the easiest ways to help manage it!
Bath Time Tips for Cradle Cap
Keeping your baby’s scalp clean and moisturized can make a big difference. Here’s how you can gently treat cradle cap while giving your little one a soothing bath:
-
Loosen the flakes before the bath
A little prep work goes a long way! About 30 minutes before bath time, apply a small amount of baby oil, coconut oil, or petroleum jelly to your baby’s scalp. This helps soften the flakes so they come off more easily when you wash their hair. -
Use a mild baby shampoo
When it’s time to wash, use a gentle, fragrance-free baby shampoo to cleanse the scalp. Lather it up and let it sit for a couple of minutes to help break down the buildup. -
Give a gentle scalp massage
Using your fingertips or a soft baby brush, gently massage your baby’s scalp in circular motions. This helps lift the flakes without irritating their delicate skin. -
Rinse thoroughly
Make sure all the shampoo is rinsed out completely. Any leftover residue could contribute to more buildup. -
Moisturize if needed
If your baby’s scalp seems dry, you can apply a light layer of fragrance-free baby lotion or oil to keep it hydrated. Just be careful not to overdo it, as too much oil can actually make cradle cap worse!
What Not to Do
While it’s tempting to try to get rid of cradle cap as quickly as possible, some approaches can do more harm than good. Here are a few things to avoid:
- Don’t pick at the flakes – It might be satisfying, but peeling or scratching at the scales can cause irritation or even infection.
- Avoid harsh shampoos or scrubs – Strong soaps and scrubbing too hard can dry out your baby’s skin and make cradle cap worse.
